Introducción

 

Intelectual y artista polifacético, Aldo Menéndez figura junto al maestro Samuel Feijoo entre los primeros impulsores del performance en Cuba y es también uno de los principales iniciadores del fotorealismo en la isla, a quien se le reconoce además un papel clave en el desarrollo de la serigrafía artística hispanoamericana, fundador del mítico Taller Portocarrero de la Habana y por si esto fuera poco el maestro Menéndez forma parte del llamado boom del cartel cubano de finales de los sesenta.  Dentro del mundo artístico latinoamericano se le considera todo un especialista, destacado periodista y promotor plástico.  Cinco años después de abandonar la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de Cubanacan, sus pinturas y dibujos eran integrados en 1972 en las colecciones permanentes del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana.
En los ochenta formó parte del Consejo Asesor de Las Artes Plásticas y de los Consejos asesores del propio Museo Nacional y del Centro Wifredo Lam, también en la etapa se le reconoce como Miembro Fundador de la Comisión Nacional de Adquisición, Tasación y Expertizaje del Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales, institución de la que llegó a ser Subdirector de Creación Artística.  El ministerio de Cultura de La Republica de Cuba le otorgó en 1987 La Orden Nacional de La Cultura Cubana.  Desde 1990 radica fuera de su país, en España y posteriormente en Estados Unidos dedicado completamente a su obra, las instituciones de estos países han considerado su trabajo al punto de colocarlo en lugares tan señalados como El Pabellón de las Artes de la Expo Universal/Sevilla 92, Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid, Casa de América, Madrid, Museum of Latin American Art de California entre otros.

 A multifaceted artist and intellectual, Aldo Menéndez, in conjunction with the Master Samuel Feijoo, is one of the driving forces behind the Performance movement in Cuba. He is also one of the pioneers of photorealism on the island, and in addition played a key role in the development of Latin American serigraphy art. He is the founder of the mythical Taller Portocarrero of Havana, and as if all this were not enough, Master Menéndez was part of the well-known Cuban poster boom of the late 70s. He is considered a veritable expert, a prominent journalist and a promoter of the arts. In 1972, five years after leaving the Cubanacan National Art School, his paintings and drawings were incorporated into the permanent collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana. In the 1980s, he was part of the Plastic Arts Assessment Board and the assessment boards of the aforementioned National Museum and the Wifredo Lam Center. During this same period, he was recognized as a Founding Member of the Cuban National Commission Fund for Acquisition, Assessment and Authentication of Cultural Property, institution where he reached the position of Assistant Director of Artistic Creation. In 1987, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cuba awarded him the National Order of Cuban Culture. He left his country in 1990, moving to Spain and subsequently to the United States. He is fully devoted to his work, which is highly esteemed in both countries and has been exhibited in places as notable as the Arts Pavilion at the Universal Expo/Sevilla 92; the Centro Cultural de la Villa in Madrid; Casa de América, Madrid; and the Museum of Latin American Art of California, among others.
